Evidence Suggests That
Photos Should Keep
The Horizon Straight

If you've been taking photos with your digital camera for some time, you should know how important horizons are in photos. When taking a landscape photo, if the horizon is tilted or at a strange angle, the whole look and feel of the photo can change.

Now, evidence has shown that photos should always keep the horizon straight. It has to do with how our human eyes expect a scene to look like. We expect straight lines in the horizon and having it tilted will distort our impression of the photo.

1. Photos of Sunsets

Take for example, a sunset photo that you're trying to take. Now, we all know that sunset photos can be tough to take - you have to time your shots at the precise moment the sun is setting or rising. Miss the shot, and you'll be waiting for another day before you get your next photo opportunity.

Now, what most people don't realize is this - it's important to keep the horizon straight in sunset photography. I know a lot of photographers who are so engrossed in getting the right shot of the sun that they forget about the horizon - wasting an otherwise good photo. What I suggest is to get a good tripod, adjust so that the horizon is straight, then wait for the precise time of the sunrise or sunset you want to snap.

2. Use Grids

A good piece of advice I've heard is to activate the grid on the LCD of your digital camera. Most cameras now have a 3 x 3 grid to allow you to focus on composition and getting your Rule of Thirds correct. However, you can use the same grid to ensure the horizon is straight. Remember to apply this tip the next time you have a horizon to shoot.

3. Tripods

As I've mentioned above, a tripod is essential in taking sunset photos. In fact, they're important for many photographic opportunities - because they help to stabilize the picture and straighten the horizon before you time your shot.

Make sure you invest in a good tripod for your photography and don't scrimp. I sometimes consider a tripod to be as important as the digital camera itself.

Well, you now understand that horizons should be kept straight when shooting photos. If you apply this tip in your landscape photos going forward, I assure you that your pictures will start turning out better.

Until next time, good luck and have a good time shooting photos!
