Do you have problems deciding on a photo printer? If you do, then you may do well to consider the Canon Pixma iP4000 photo printer in your list of options.

This new printer from Canon makes light work of both photo printing and text printing tasks.

This article explores some of the features and benefits of this photo printer. Read on and find out if it is suitable for you.

The Pixma iP4000 is Canon's fastest consumer inkjet printer to date, printing at speeds of 25 ppm in black and 17 ppm in color. It comes with a 5-color ink system, includes two paper input trays and supports double-sided printing. Impressed? Well, let's look at its features in more detail below.

Design and Construction

The Canon Pixma iP4000 printer is a fairly compact and lightweight printer, measuring 16 X 11 X 7 inches. The design is very very stylish, with a blue-gray and silver finish. Given its size, you should have no problems fitting it into your existing workspace.

The Ink System

The Canon Pixma iP4000 is clearly optimized for photo printing. The ink system consists of five colors, including Yellow, Cyan, Magenta and Black (dye-based) and Black (pigment-based). The dye-based version of the black color helps to create better quality photo printouts.

What's also wonderful about the iP4000 is that each of the five ink tanks are individually replaceable. Compared to some other printers, this saves you money because you don't have to throw the whole cartridge away when only one of the colors has been used up.

Duplex Printing

The Pixma iP4000 has a built-in duplexer, which means you can print on both sides of the paper. This will cut down your paper wastage and also allow you to print out interesting greeting cards, newsletters or catalogs.

Connectivity

The printer comes with great connectivity options. There's a standard USB 1.1 port and a parallel port for connection to your computer. Plus, there's a second USB connector in front of the printer for printing from a PictBridge compliant camera. PictBridge is an industry standard that allows images to be printed directly from any digital camera or camcorder, regardless of brand name, without the need for a computer.

Paper Types Supported

The Canon Pixma iP4000 has two possible paper loading options. One is a top-mounted auto sheet loader, whilst the other is an internal cassette in the bottom. Each paper trays can support up to 150 sheets of letter-size plain paper, as well as 4x6 photo paper, 5x7 photo paper, letter-size photo paper and #10 envelopes.

Quality of Printouts

I tried printing out a couple of 4X6 borderless photos to check the print of the iP4000. The speed of printing was pretty good - it took only about 1 minute and 5 seconds for a 4X6 photo to come out. The colors on the photos were faithfully reproduced by the iP4000 - practically indiscernible from one developed from a photo printing kiosk.

Shortcomings

Perhaps the only thing I dislike about the Canon Pixma iP4000 is that it is slightly slow to commence a print job. After you submit a print job, there's quite a bit of ink cartridge movement back and forth and you hear the sound of machinery moving about. The printer prints quickly, but it thinks about printing for a while. Of course, to be fair, this is a phenomenon found in all inkjet printers, as the inkjet head needs to prep up before starting the print.

Conclusion

All in all, I find the Canon Pixma iP4000 to be an excellent printer for printing both photos and text. The 5 color ink system, duplex printing features, as well as PictBridge support and beautiful print quality makes it one very appealing printer. It's an very good deal within its price range and I would certainly recommend it to those hunting for a photo printer.
