Adobe Photoshop Elements 3
Image Editing Software

The latest entry level image editor from Adobe Systems is called Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.

The software package is sort of a cross between Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 and Photoshop Album. You get a host of image organization cum image editing tools.

What are the key features and benefits of Photoshop Elements 3? Well, that's what we will explore in this article.

Photoshop Elements 3 has a very simple user interface and is clearly geared towards for beginners. But don’t be fooled – the tool has some very powerful and flexible tools which even intermediate level users can make use of. In this Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 review, we take a look at the key features of this product.

The Organizer and The Editor

The first thing you realize about Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 is that it is really two applications combined into one. There is an ‘Organizer’ which lets you locate browse your photo collection and locate specific photos of interest. There is an ‘Editor’ where you can perform all sorts of image editing tasks on a photo. The integration between the two is seamless, meaning you can locate a photo in Organizer, then send it to the Editor with one click.

Tagging Photos

One of the strengths of Adobe Photoshop Album is its ability to add custom tags to photos. In Adobe Photoshop Elements 3, that feature is retained, enabling you to organize your photo collection like a huge database of pictures.

Sharing Photos

There are a host of options for sharing your photos in Photoshop Elements 3. You can attach the photos to email, burn CDs and DVDs, create calendars and postcards, upload a Web image gallery, among others.

Image Editing Features

Let’s not forget the image editing features found in Adobe Photoshop Elements 3. Besides the standard rotate, crop, resize, and other image editing tools, Photoshop Elements 3 has two new innovative tools I like. One is the Healing Brush, which helps you automatically remove blemishes and imperfections from photos. There’s also a built-in red-eye removal tool for quickly fixing those red-eyed photos.

Shortcomings

Despite its many advantageous, you should take note of some quirks in this software. The first is that it lacks support for CD label printing. This is a feature I’ve come to expect in the latest image editing software, but is strangely lacking here.

The second quirk is that the filters and layer style options in the program are a little confusing. It took me quite a while, after reading the help files, to figure out how they work.

Conclusion

In summary, Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 is a great image editing software that’s suitable for beginners and intermediate level users. It does an excellent job of editing, organizing and sharing your digital photo collection. You’ll be hard pressed to find another program that has its ease-of-use, coupled with great features. The closest competitors to this product would be Ulead PhotoImpact and Paint Shop Pro – which are also good alternatives to consider if you’re purchasing an image editor.
