The Digital Photographer #054: When Do You Use Wideangle Lenses? January 20, 2009 |
Welcome to this edition of The Digital Photographer. In this issue, we'll be talking wideangle lenses and when to use them. We also learn why I always travel with two cameras when taking photos on the road. Enjoy the newsletter!
Term Of The WeekWideangle Lenses - Wideangle lenses are used by photographers mainly for landscapes. They are very useful for sweeping panoramas, group shots and other outdoor scenes. Whenever you need to photograph something that requires strong perspective, think of using wideangle lenses. A wideangle lens has a deep depth of field which makes making constant refocusing less critical. So it's also very useful if you need to snap a photo in a hurry or if the subject is moving fast.
Tip Of The WeekIf you are on the road and taking a lot of photographs, it helps to remember this tip about what equipment to bring. I have a strategy I like to use to ensure I travel lightly and yet have sufficient camera equipment. The trick is to bring two cameras; one digital SLR camera and one small digital point-and-shoot camera. For the SLR, I typically bring two lenses; one midrange telephoto lens (70-200 mm) and one fixed wide angle lens (24 mm). With these two types of lenses you are all set for effective photos of people as well as landscapes and scenery.
