Editor's ViewPoint

Hello there, welcome to the month of February 2006! Its been an interesting week here at Basic-Digital-Photography.com. There are some interesting tidbits of news we have for you - so read on ...

Well, first up this week: Olympus introduces the EVOLT E-330, first live view D-SLR Olympus today introduced the world's first digital SLR with a usable live view feature. Yes, it's the rumored EVOLT E-330, a camera which has a live view LCD and an optical viewfinder.

Panasonic has also taken the wraps off a new ultra zoom camera: the DMC-FZ7. This camera is an updated version of the popular FZ5, which was introduced last year.

Finally, there's the release of the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D, an excellent entry-level D-SLR with built-in image stabilization. Like its big brother, the Maxxum 7D, the 5D has Minolta's exclusive Anti-shake system, making the two the only D-SLRs with image stabilization built into the camera body.

Definition of the ISO setting in a digital camera

Question: Could you help me understand what the ISO setting in a digital camera is? I hear a lot about it but don't understand what it does.

Jeremy, Edinburgh

Answer: The ISO setting determines how fast the image sensor in a digital camera records light. An ISO setting of 50 or 100 records light less quickly than a higher ISO setting of 200 or 400.

Unfortunately, the higher the ISO setting, the more digital noise you will have in your image. If you’re unable to shoot with a fast enough shutter speed to meet the objectives of your photo, then using the lowest ISO setting your camera offers is always best — that is, unless you want digital noise to be part of your photo.

Tip of The Week

When taking photos with a digital camera, many people think that they can learn as much about an image’s exposure from the image displayed on the LCD monitor as they can from the histogram.

That is not the case, though. When you look at an image in bright light, the LCD monitor can be washed out, making the image look lighter than it really is. When you make an exposure compensation for this lightness, you will later find out that you have underexposed your photo.

Make sure you check the histogram. When you look at the histogram to determine exposure levels, you are looking at a graph instead of just the image. Bright light will not affect your judgment of exposure when reading the histogram.
